Programme areas

UNFPA has three main programme areas:

Reproductive Health including Family Planning and Sexual Health
UNFPA supports the provision of reproductive health care including wider choice of family planning methods and information. Reproductive health care services include: safe motherhood; counselling and prevention of infertility; preventing and treating reproductive tract infections and sexually transmitted diseases including HIV/AIDS; and dealing with the health consequences of unsafe abortion.

Population and Development Strategy
UNFPA helps countries formulate, implement and evaluate comprehensive population policies as a central part of sustainable development strategies. This includes support for data collection and analysis, and research.

Advocacy
UNFPA is an advocate for ICPD and ICPD+5 goals which include: reproductive health and rights; improving the status of women; longer life expectancy; lower infant and maternal mortality; closing the gender gap in education; strengthening national capacity to formulate and implement population and development strategies; and increasing awareness and resources for population and development.

UNFPA offers assistance only at a country's own request. While there is international agreement on population and development goals, each country must decide its own approach.

In the global perspective, UNFPA's programmes are focused on the key population related issues:

In Ukraine, UNFPA addresses the population issues related to the country priority needs and the ICPD goals:

  • Developing reproductive and sexual health care services
  • Promoting reproductive rights
  • Population and development strategies
  • Promoting gender equality
  • Prevention of violence towards girls and women
  • Prevention of human trafficking
  • Promoting safe behavior among adolescents and youth
  • Combating HIV infection spread
  • STI/HIV infection prevention among the uniformed services
  • Addressing special needs of people in Chernobyl affected areas and Crimea
  • Improving reproductive health of refugees

UNFPA's assistance in Ukraine is channeled through projects implemented in partnership with national counterparts, other UN agencies, non-governmental organizations and international donor community.
