Programme Issues
Developing reproductive and sexual health care services
- UNFPA continuously supports the implementation of national strategies in the area of reproductive and sexual health providing technical support to the Ministry of Health and specialized health care facilities
- UNFPA provided methodological and technical assistance to the social services in Ukraine so that now they are able to provide counseling services in the area of reproductive and sexual health
- UNFPA supports integration of various service providers related to reproductive and sexual health care to level up the quality and accessibility of services in all regions
- Shipments of contraceptives from UNFPA under local projects has covered the country’s estimated needs (under the National Programmes “Family Planning” and “Reproductive Health”) for about 3 years – donated contraceptives were available free of charge to eligible categories of family planning services’ clients
Promoting reproductive health and reproductive rights
- UNFPA provided training to national medical and social service providers on reproductive rights and provided promotional IEC materials on reproductive health and reproductive rights to service delivery points in all regions of Ukraine
- About 100 journalists were trained with UNFPA’s support in 2000-2002 on coverage of reproductive health and reproductive rights in the mass media
Population and development strategies
- UNFPA provided expertise to the Ministry of Health in preparation of the National Programs “Family Planning” for 1997-2000 and “Reproductive Health” for 2001-2005.
- State Statistics Committee used UNFPA’s technical support to organize and conduct the 2001 National Census
Promoting gender equality/Prevention of violence towards girls and women/Prevention of human trafficking
- UNFPA supported a national survey on violence towards girls and women in 1998
- A series of workshops on gender equality was organized by UNFPA for women’s NGOs in 1998-2000 using the Umbrella project funds
Promoting safe behavior among adolescents and youth
- UNFPA supported establishment and development of youth NGOs network “Krona” in 2000-2003
- Youth NGOs received training on strategic planning, fundraising, peer education and behavior changing communications
- Support to the international Y-Peer network for peer educators
Combating HIV infection spread
- UNFPA is an active player in the joint UN programme of HIV/AIDS prevention in Ukraine entitled “Act Now!”
- Several UNFPA projects are specifically aimed at HIV infection prevention, other have special components on this topic
- UNFPA carries out preparatory activities to introduce condom social marketing in Ukraine as a tool to increase use of condoms for STI/HIV infection prevention
- UN Theme Group on HIV/AIDS includes representatives of UNFPA
STI/HIV infection prevention among the uniformed services
- UNFPA has implemented a series of successful projects in the Army and Internal Forces of Ukraine on developing efficient education system for STI/HIV prevention among personnel – this experience has been reproduced in other countries of the region
- A similar project is being implemented for the Police Force, with special focus on the human rights education for policemen
- UNFPA develops partnership between all uniformed services for comprehensive and coordinated STI/HIV infection prevention coverage of their staff (Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Interior, State Security Service, Tax Police, Boarder Guards)
Addressing special needs of people in Chernobyl affected areas and Crimea
- UNFPA provides support related to reproductive health of people in Chernobyl affected areas and Crimea jointly with UNDP and UNESCO Chernobyl Programme
Improving reproductive health of refugees
- UNFPA collaborates with UNHCR to provide quality reproductive health services to refugees living in Ukraine
- Training for refugees’ NGOs on reproductive health and reproductive rights was provided by UNFPA
Contributing to joint UN initiatives
- UNFPA was actively involved in the first national cycle of CCA/UNDAF and currently is represented in CCA working groups on health and HIV/AIDS
- UNFPA participates in the UN joint response to the HIV infection epidemic
