The first in a series of three training workshop "Active and Healthy Longevity" for older volunteers from the southern regions of Ukraine was conducted in the city of Mykolaiv on 12-14 May 2008. The workshop was organized under the UNFPA project UKR1P41A "Supporting the Implementation of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing in Ukraine". A total of 28 older volunteers representing Mykolaiv region and the Autonomuos Republic of Crimea attended the workshop. The training programme covered the following topics:

  • Psychology of communication with older people
  • Age-related changes in human body
  • Healthy lifestyle as a basis for active longevity
  • Care for older people
  • Health conditions in older people requiring emergency medical care
  • First aid
  • Volunteering in older age
  • Ethics during volunteer work
  • Incentives for volunteer activities
  • Administration of information resource points for older people
  • Information management at information resource points for older people
  • Engaging people into volunteer activities
  • Collaboration with the mass media
  • Counseling skills
  • Management of street activities
  • Organization of support groups

The workshop programme and materials were developed jointly by the State Scientific and Methodological Centre for Geriatrics and NGO Age Concern Ukraine, UNFPA's partner organizations under this project.

Dr. Oleg Voronenko, UNFPA Programme Officer, spoke at the workshop on the global population ageing and the role of UN and UNFPA in addressing population ageing challenges at the global and country levels.
