On the 7th of August 2008 by initiative of the UNFPA a round table meeting "Universities of third Age: older generation in the modern information environment" (U3A) was held in the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy of Ukraine. It was organized under the UNFPA project UKR1P41A "Supporting the Implementation of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing in Ukraine". The main purpose of the round table was to discuss the development of U3A programme in Ukraine in order to increase social activity and communication of older people, improve their health and physical activity, as well as provide lifelong education.

  

Representatives from the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy of Ukraine, the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, the Ministry of Ukraine for Family, Youth and Sport, the Institute of Gerontology of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, the UNFPA, local NGOs and territorial centres of social support for older people participated in round table debates.

During the discussion the main targets of the U3A, an innovative programme for Ukraine, were determined and are as follows:

  • all-round development of older people;
  • older persons adaptation to the contemporary living conditions;
  • reintegration of older population in active life of society;
  • organization of communication;
  • formation of principles of healthy lifestyle in older age.

In addition, it was stressed on the necessity to consolidate every effort of local and state authorities, as well as of academic communities to react to the ageing problem in the light of all existing spheres of life. In this context the implementation of the U3A programme could play a very important role while promoting active and healthy longevity of older people.
